BTW: The same kind of problem will happen if someone wants to install
the compiler on a _central_ file server which should provide the
compiler via NFS for other machines (maybe even for a different
architecture or OS). In such a case the version and architecture
checks bite... back.
IMO at least an option to override the version and architecture checks
would be nice...
