In some cases, those packages just aren't portable at all. They won't work anywhere but Linux. That's something that an open source maintainer might just care about. In fact, we've been striving for exactly that (but s/Linux/all/ -- let's not leave out *BSD and other platforms), which is why you'll find "-h" on du/ls as well as other well-known extensions.
