In some cases, those packages just aren't portable at all.  They won't
work anywhere but Linux.  That's something that an open source
maintainer might just care about.

I don't think it's a one-way street.

In fact, we've been striving for exactly that (but s/Linux/all/ --
let's not leave out *BSD and other platforms), which is why you'll
find "-h" on du/ls as well as other well-known extensions.  If you
find places where that's not true, and the fixes look feasible, file
an RFE.
