I think the requirement around doing partial or incremental merges is a
stopper. At least with any large projects that I've been involved with
spanning hundreds of files, it gets difficult to merge everything in
one sitting. And as Dan mentioned, many projects will "assign" parts
of the merge to various individuals which seems to imply an incremental
approach.

Would an incremental merge between files be sufficient? Or do you want
incremental merge within one file as well?
