CTF (PSARC 2001/021) was created because the existing symbol
interfaces were too bulky to carry around in the kernel.

I don't think I care which format wins this contest, but I would like
to see Sun commit itself to the minimum number of formats necessary to
do the job (one if possible), and to full support for the formats that
it does need.  Having to depend on unstable interfaces and conversion
utilities is a nuisance at best.
