I used JT65 first on 6M, then on 160M.
All of this kvetching sounds like spark operators complaining about CW and AM operators complaining about "silly slop bucket" ... or the eco-nuts chaining themselves to old growth trees.
Yep, I was there (just starting high school with General ticket). SSB rigs were more expensive, more complex.
