There is a pretty good chapter in the Windows Installer Help (as installed by the WiX tools installer), which I just found again: In the Contents tab navigate to How To Guides -> Updates -> How To: Implement a Major Upgrade In Your Installer It's also available online at http://wix.sourceforge.net/manual-wix3/major_upgrade.htm Probably the most important advice: "Step 4: Test upgrade scenarios before you ship version 1" Today, I tested a bit installing upgrades/downgrades using f757dc6859a5 of thg-winbild on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Removal of preinstalled products seems to work.
