Actually there is no "best choice" of tools for writing. I think the tool you're familliar with is the best one. But if you want to use an open source tool why not using "write" from open office. Even if you are familliar with the M$-stuff you'll have no problems using this tool. You also have not to dicard your work because it is possible to convert directly from M$-format to open document format.
