I just did a search on-line to dig up those URLs to post here, and I
found *new* entries from people having the same problem. We all assumed
it was Tortoise causing the problem, but it turns out that *MOZY* was
what everyone had in common:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?p=1385433

A new version of Mozy inserts Windows overlays over files that are
backed up. I found the configuration option to turn those overlays off.
Now they're off, and the overlays are gone.

I just wish I could get my old configuration back (before I blew nearly
everything away). I guess I could use Mozy to restore much of it, but
it's probably better to start fresh anyway.

Thanks for all of your help. Sorry for the bother. :(
