I agree with your comments, but not being a hardcore user that uses all the
features of Mercurial, I can only say our team only has issues with the icons
being out of sync. Never had them disappear and if they did, I never noticed.

If a simple F5 worked for me, it wouldn't be too bad. However, I don't think I
would have had the feeling 'I can relate to that' when I saw the thread, if it
didn't happen often enough for me to make note of what I have to do each time.

Saying all that, the overlays do work and unless Microsoft changes anything in
a new update, I can't see a need for constant maintenance. Since I'm not in a
position of being a contributor, I don't know what you guys have to deal with
all the time.

Certainly did not mean to offend anyone in my last response, just providing my
experience so that you guys can make the best decision possible. The overlays
are fast with respect to not slowing Explorer's performance. We only use the
TortoiseHg interface.

If the overlays are not impacting performance or stability and they don't
require constant code maintenance, leave them in, in addition to the new
explorer.

Subject: Re: [thg] Recent FUD about the overlays

Well I think FUD is too strong a word here, but I agree that the
overlays work pretty well these days, at least for me on Windows 7 (32
and 64 bit). While I don't use them much, I have them installed, and
everything seems pretty much in sync. I can't remember disappearing
icons since before the current C++ version of the code.

Sure, sometimes it's a bit slow with updating, but it's not a *huge*
problem at least. While I of course fully support a file browser in hgtk
(not the least because you can do things there that otherwise can't be
done, such as showing how the tree looked in a past revision), I
personally also think we should keep the overlays as they are; certainly
at least until the built-in browser project has come much more to fruition.

Hopefully, the overlay code won't be needing much upkeep in the future.

All that said, I am much more a shell person myself, so I am not the
best judge of the quality of this part of TortoiseHg.
