Only git format diffs can represent binary files, and until recently Mercurial would not use them unless you explicitly enabled them. Does your patch file have 'diff --git' phrases in them?
No I am not using git diff. I will try turning that on and testing that out. I did more research on git diff, and understand a bit better what its purpose was.
