I'm glad my description was helpful.

I get access denied a lot and for me it's always because the files in my
working copy are flagged as readonly, so I'd check that first.

What's in the working copy has no affect on what is pulled or pushed from
that repository, so you don't really have to update your 'source'
respository's working copy if you don't need the files there for some other
reason.
