I wrote Mel yesterday with a longer note that was somewhat to this effect, but my critical realization was that my comments represented a serious expectations/culture mismatch. I was making assumptions about the process I was joining, and brought a particular perspective as to how these kinds of artifacts evolve. Because Mel and I had been talking about working together on the POSSE process and documents for some time, I started to develop a picture of how that would go -- but I forgot how open processes work. Even though I'm trying to introduce my students to open processes, there are still times when I get taken by surprise. My experiences doing research and developing software with academic colleagues around the world still haven't really prepared me for the dynamicism of open document collaboration and the like. It's a hard transition, and I haven't made it yet.
