Dear Steven,
There is absolutely no problem to forward my initial message to your
students. Thank you very much in advance !
It could be kind of you, to explain them OpenOffice.org name is now
"Apache OpenOffice" (since Oracle donated the trademark to the Apache
Software Foundation).
And if this can help you, there is some additional information below,
to explain our methodology. These links are only a little trace of my
last participation as mentor for Go-OO (OpenOffice.org was refused),
and it was about fixing a 9 years old bug: the famous "issue 972" .
I could provide more information, but I don't want to flood this list.
Feel free to ask me other pointers if you need more ... :-)
Regards,
Eric Bachard

Dear Eric,
My capstone class (3rd & 4th year students) has spent a good part
of the year working on LibreOffice. They are just now getting in
their first patch for issues with the speadsheet and moving on to
other issues. Would it make sense to send the entire class (12
students) the message below to see if people are interested? (I
won't go into the LibreOffice/OpenOffice division but hope that
isn't a serious issue for what you want).
All the best,
Steve

Hello,
GSoC is a great opportunity for students, and FOSS. One more time,
Apache Software Foundation is accepted as application. This allows
Apache OpenOffice (new OpenOffice.org name, since Oracle
transfered the trademark to the Apache Softare Foundation)
participation, and we can propose subjects.
Until something is accepted (starting me accepted as mentor on the
Apache side ;-) ), and to inform everybody, I did some proposals.
As GSoc mentor since 2006, I know well the thing and can mentor
one or two (maxi) students, whatever the choosen subject, but any
help, or even someone taking over one subject is possible and
welcome.
Here are the subjects I proposed for GSoC2012 :
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-69 : Implement online
SVG Gallery in Apache OpenOffice
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-70 : Open and manage
Maxima sessions in Writer documents
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-71 : Implement the
Image rotation in Apache OpenOffice Writer, using Draw/Impress
objects
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/COMDEV-72 : Implement
Impress OpenGL 3D transitions on Mac OS X and improve them
(implement reverse transition, according to backward / forward sense)

list prefered**), or discuss with us directly on IRC***
Thanks in advance,
Eric
