The next NSF-funded Professors' Open Source Software Experience workshop will 
be held November 13-15 in Santa Clara!  Given that we've only held one prior 
POSSE on the west coast, applicants from the west coast will be given priority 
for this opportunity, but applications from all U.S. locations are encouraged. 
(We can only fund full-time instructors/faculty from U.S. institutions.)

humanitarian open source projects while also learning cutting edge professional 
skills!

We are excited to announce the next POSSE: the Professors’ Open Source Software 
Experience workshop:

When: November 13-15, 2025
Where: UCSC Silicon Valley Extension, Santa Clara, CA

This faculty workshop will help you engage students in open source software and 
team-based software development. The workshop focused on student engagement 
with Humanitarian Free and Open Source Software (HFOSS) projects. HFOSS is open 
source software that has a humanitarian purpose such as food pantries, 
sustainability, disaster management, or health care.

Workshop Format: This workshop has two stages:

  *   Stage 1 - Starts October 6, 2025, with online activities. These 
activities will take 2-3 hours/week and be completed asynchronously. In 
addition, you will meet synchronously online with facilitators and participants 
for Q&A and coordination for stage 2.

  *   Stage 2 – The 2.5 day face-to-face workshop held at the UCSC Silicon 
Valley Extension in Santa Clara, CA November 13-15.

Join the community of over 175 faculty members who have attended POSSE and are 
interested in their students developing software skills while doing social good 
by participating in HFOSS.

Prior work with open source is not required. More than one applicant per 
institution is encouraged.

Application deadline: We will accept applications on a rolling basis with a 
deadline of September 30.
Notification: Within a week of submission of the application

Participant Support: NSF funding will provide support for travel, as well as 2 
nights lodging and meals during the workshop.
