Thanks for your help and suggestions, Graham. I hope someone is able to
progress this further as mine did not work with a PAE kernel. (Yes, I
noted the Lubuntu-fake-PAE option...)

Title:
On modem initialization, Modem Manager 0.5.2 sets text mode instead of
PDU mode for SMS, but newer modems can't work in this mode

Status in “modem-manager-gui” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in “modemmanager” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
To-date, cannot utilise Modem Manager GUI in 12.04 LTS, as it is understood
that there is a 'bug' in Modem Manager version 0.5.2 that installed in Ubuntu
12.04 by default. On modem initialization it sets text mode instead of PDU mode
for SMS, but newer modems can't work in this mode.
I understand the GUI works well and has been introduced into Saucy Salamander
and later versions, but Modem Manager versions 0.6 or later has not yet been
made available for 12.04 LTS users which enables its SMS functions etc to work.

It is hoped that an updated version of Modem Manager that addresses
this and other bug fixes can be introduced into 12.04 LTS very soon
for users like myself who have been looking out patiently for a couple
of years for this functionality. Thanks in advance for the anticipated
  support... cheers!
