I've added a workaround to Xmir to deal with this bug...

Not sure if we'll keep that though, because the simpler workaround is also 
nicer:
    gimp --no-splash

Longer term the right answer is still to fix this bug in Unity8 itself,
as well as bug 1497085.

Bug description:
  I'm trying to run Gimp in a Vivid + overlay PPA Unity 8 desktop
  session using Xmir from the overlay PPA with the '-rootless -flatten'
  Xmir options. Gimp fails to start in this situation.

  I've attached the application and unity8 log files.
