Public bug reported:

A user on IRC reported this issue

I have undeletable thread with no messages in my Messages application.
I did something when creating contact.
Probably clicked to create a message for the contact and then closed messages
application. But I am not sure.
I realized I have undeletable empty thread after several days.
Previously I tried to fix it by deleting the contact, but I was not able to
delete the contact as well.
I finally managed to delete it by deleting in owncloud and syncing, but the
thread did not disappear. Only displayed as number, not name.

He found an entry in threads like accountname|number|0|||0|0
Deleting that resolved it.

** Affects: messaging-app (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
