I had a look at a copy of Ruben's file, and tried it on the Meizu MX4.
The mediascanner failed to add it to the index, but also didn't crash.

After restarting the mediascanner, it added a placeholder entry into the
index for it (something it probably should have done after the initial
failure).  The thumbnailer failed to screenshot the video and the media
player failed to play it, so I think this is just a case of an
unsupported file format.
