@ubuntu release team In Debian deferred/2 queue now there is a refactored libpng16 with *real* libpng-dev package, and dropped libpng16-dev one.
Since we want to have only one libpng at each time, I don't think it is a good idea to provide a libpngSONAME-dev package, specially because people will use it, and make the transition always difficult. Of course this is out of xenial scope, so I propose: leave things as is for xenial, without libpng-dev provided or real.. After xenial, sync libpng1.6 from Debian and start the transition before the next Ubuntu Stable. (the transition in Debian will start probably in a month or so, even if I have no authoritative answer from release team yet, after the package will be accepted in experimental I'll wait for the ack). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to libpng in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1524328 Title: libpng 1.6 support Status in libpng package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: As said, in Debian it is pretty much in place, and I sync'd/merged almost every package in Ubuntu too. Would it be possible to have the transition done for Xenial? I can fix stuff in Universe, but not in Main (there is not many packages there AFAICS) this is the debian bug https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=650601 you can start from this message: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=650601#691 thanks! Gianfranco ---- Libpng 1.6 has been out for a little while, apparently it has some important fixes for pngquant (which is also in Ubuntu). There are comments here that maybe useful: https://github.com/pornel/pngquant/blob/master/rwpng.c Presumably at some point libpng1.2 will be EOL so we'll need to upgrade anyhow!
