Get this issue on Ubuntu 12.04.5 amd64 host using VirtualBox 5.1.10 with Ubuntu 16.04.1 x86 guest. The screen shows rainbow of pixels, not the desktop. Turning off 3D acceleration does not solve the problem. Pressing right Ctrl+F1, then Ctrl+F7 solved the problem.
