As requested I downloaded the latest build and ran it from USB. After selecting hybrid graphics in BIOS I booted up and was delighted to see no mouse trails on the 2nd monitor!
I then rebooted back into 16.04 leaving hybrid graphics selected - no mouse trails! I think there was an Intel firmware update a week or two ago that I got on Windows, maybe it updated the Intel graphics firmware? Whatever happened I am happy to say that I cannot now duplicate the problem and hybrid graphics seems to be working properly in both 16.04 and 17.10.
