This problem has shown up in 16.04 with alsamixer v1.1.0. Did someone remove the patch or fail to integrate the fix into 16.04 had to run alsamixer from terminal and unmute the speaker from there. Muting and un-muting in rhythem box does not fix the HDMI sound problem.
