[CMI8738 - C-Media CMI8738] pactl stat failed to find default card

Bug description:

Audio (pulseaudio 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu14)
cuts out after several minutes in VLC or flash. When I close the
program sound is still working and it returns for a while if I restart
the offending (VLC or HULU) application. I am currently running a
fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 i386 but had the same problem with
Kubuntu 10.04 i686. I had installed the Alsa 1.0.23 drivers on the
Kubuntu system and thought that was the issue so i did a fresh install
using alsa 1.0.22 from the Ubuntu repositories but the problem
remains. I also have the Pulseaudio equalizer 2.7 installed but the
problem happens whether or not the equalizer is enabled.
