Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.04 with GNU bash, version 4.3.48(1)-release (x86_64-pc-
linux-gnu), both in DigitalOcean droplets and Linode VPSs, I encounter
the following problem:

here-document tabulations turn into single dots even when <<-EOF is
used.

A Linode engineer replicated this in Ubuntu 14.04 and 17.04 as well.

It happens when I SSH with various SSH clients from Windows 10 (Putty,
MobaXterm, etc).

It is likely a bug in Ubuntu Bash:

Here you can find a detailed, markdowned description with steps to
reproduce:

modified-ubuntu-bash-includes-dots-instead-tabulati
