Poppler 0.86.1 has nice fixes in the glib backend, which is used by Evince, as it is has this MR https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/-/merge_requests/377 which fixes this 3 year old bug https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler/poppler/issues/129 https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/issues/1280
