Title:
after adjusting volume slider both with mouse and on hardware volume
control the system freezes and cannot shutdown

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-media

Whenever I try and adjust the volume my computer freezes up. If I
adjust a little bit upwards, the volume slider goes all the way up and
then flickers constantly. If I try and adjust down, it goes all the
way down and then flickers constantly. There is no way to choose an
in-between set point. After trying to adjust the volume everything
freezes up...I cannot type anything or change any programs. I also
cannot reboot the system or shut down. I have to wait until my battery
power is used up and then the system shuts down. I can then restart
and everything is fine...until I try and adjust volume. This happens
both when trying to adjust volume using the volume slider and/or
trying to adjust volume using my computer's volume knob (hardware)
which brings up the volume slider on screen and has the same issues
  above.
