Public bug reported:

Ctrl+Alt+F1 used to give you access to a cirtual terminal, or virtual
console, not entirely sure what that's called, where you can log in into
a shell and run commands.

I use that when some of the tons of bugs in Ubuntu makes the system hang
so badly that I can't even open a terminal window, in order to figure
out if there's a process that I can kill. Then I'd be able to return to
the xorg screen with Ctrl+Alt+F7.

Now (and even while the system is not hung at all) I'm doing
ctrl+Alt+F1, and all I get is a black screen with no console/terminal at
all. Completely fucking useless,
