cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
rm -rf extensions
and then log in again.
If the problem still occurs then next time it does please:
1. Wait 10 seconds.
2. Reboot.
3. Run:
journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt
4. Attach the resulting text file here.

The window area becomes unusable without warning and the same visual
artefacts are seen (see attached). The system taskbar is still
responsive, so I can logout/login, which resolves the issues
temporarily.
