I tried to reproduce this twice, but couldn't. I did a fresh xubuntu 22.04 install, and then upgraded the machine. I didn't experience this bug, but I did get the following crash (attached)

I know this has been a bug in the past, but I do not believe it is the cause here. (2) A work around for this is to drop into a rescue shell, and from root, run e.g. `passwd ubuntu` to reset the user's password.
