Ah, removing ofono (and manually removing /var/lib/ofono afterwards) seems to do the trick

Trying to enable mobile broadband and then clicking on "/234308387636800/context1" (what does that even mean?) results in a rather unhelpful error dialog (see the second screenshot). Trying to enable mobile broadband and then clicking on "New Mobile Broadband connection..." results in nothing happening except for that menu entry becoming checked. But no internet. I can't add a connection via "Edit Connections..." because no 3G devices are listed.
