Ah, removing ofono (and manually removing /var/lib/ofono afterwards) seems to do the trick

Please find attached a screenshot of the nm-applet menu - you'll notice that my adapter appears to be listed twice ("Mobile Broadband (Dell DW5560)" and "Mobile Broadband ()"). Trying to enable mobile broadband and then clicking on "/234308387636800/context1" (what does that even mean?) results in a rather unhelpful error dialog (see the second screenshot). Trying to enable mobile broadband and then clicking on "New Mobile Broadband connection..." results in nothing happening except for that menu entry becoming checked. But no internet. I can't add a connection via "Edit Connections..." because no 3G devices are listed.
