Please be more specific what yo umean by "crashes on login". Do you have
some Apport crash reports which you could upload? If nothing actually
crashed, but you just can't see anything on the screen, can you ssh into
the VM and retrieve dmesg, /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Title:
qemu-kvm virtual machines crash with some but not all ubuntu flavors
  when vmvga video is selected

Status in qemu package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I create my VMs with virt-manager and tried "Video Modell vmvga" in
order to let the VM use my whole screen of 1920x1200. This works with
some Ubuntu flavours, but others crash on login:

The host is Ubuntu 12.04.05 LTS, using Gnome-classic as GUI. All VMs
  were updated to latest state.

All VMs run, when "Video Modell cirrus" is selected, however, this
allows only a max display resolution of 1280*1024, insufficient for
  some graphics work.

But when running "Video Modell vmvga" (all being otherwise identically
  configured):

  Ubuntu Unity 14.04 .................. ok
Kubuntu 14.04 .......................... ok (occasional crashes)
Ubuntu Cinnamon 14.04 ......... shows login screen, crashes on login (this
VM was cloned from Unity, Cinnamon then added)
Ubuntu Gnome 14.04................ shows login screen, crashes on login
(installed from fresh download)
Ubuntu Mate 14.04.01 ............. shows login screen, crashes on login
(installed from fresh download)

Ubuntu Unity has such tiny fonts that usage is almost impossible. Only
Kubuntu is usable in that regard, but this crashes occasionally
