enabling autohide on 12.04.2 requires logout to become effective

Bug description:
Just installed Ubuntu-Desktop 12.04.2 x86_64 on a friend's laptop.
went to system settings -> appearance -> behaviour and set auto-hide
to "ON"
It required a logout/login to become effective, the launcher would not
autohide otherwise.
I do not observe this on 13.04.
