It works as designed.  There is no proximity sensor involved and it only
switches when triggered by the type of input.  This was a complaint that
several beta testers had - that it will be 'stuck' in the screen
corresponding to the input method that was last used.  The opposite
scenario, IMO, is just a bad.  If you normally prefer the large text in
the Now Playing screen and you happen to use the touch interface, then
you need to find the IR remote and press a button to get it to switch
to the larger text.

But... The information on your screen shouldn't 'disappear', depending
on your scroll mode setting (Settings > Screen > Now Playing > Scroll
Mode).  The default mode of 'Standard scrolling' should scroll each of
the lines when the text is wider than the screen.  You can also use the
text-only screen, which displays more text by using the full width of
the screen.  Press 'Now Playing' on the remote to cycle through the
different Now Playing screens.
