I was hoping that the SD-card approach, might lift the performance above ethernet streaming. To be honest. To me what I heard made sense as soon as I thought about what's running on this little machine in case you play local stuff. I am seriously playing around with audio on Linux systems, rt-kernels, Alsa and low level system optimizations since almost 4 years now - just focusing on SQ. The effect is and has always been the same. More load more trouble, audible on high resolving systems only. This applies not only for Linux machines. Don't ask me to provide measurements. Nobody has done it. And nobody will manage to do that. Even highly regarded high end DAC manufactures failed to prove these existing effects. Another interesting test-case to nail it down would be to run a file from SD-card with aplay to see how this compares to streaming. Of course you'll loose volume control this way and ethernet needs to remain connected. I for sure give that one a try and will further look into that general issue.
