Just an idea that I haven't tested, but maybe you could fiddle with the ALBUMSORT tag, e.g., filling the ALBUMSORT tag with "YEAR"+"ALBUM"? It is easy to fill the ALBUMSORT tag this way with a good tagging program like mp3tag (which works with FLAC and MP3).
It should work for getting the Artist/Year sort that you want, but it could break some other browsing modes. If you're interested, try doing it for 1 or 2 artists to see if you like the results before unleashing it on your whole collection.
