I think the common wisdom here is that it is best to power external USB drives from a source other than the TOUCH itself. So yes, a hub might be useful. Not sure that is causing your problem, but a good idea to use hub nonetheless. I have seen other posts indicating that the thumbs on mp3 is a bug introduced in latest software. So that will likely be fixed with the next version.
