Try another "normal" cable ;) and try Toslink . Can't imagine there is a hardware problem when 16/44.1 does work
I have Meridian myself but a G68J can it possibly be a setup issue ? These things have many settings, maybe a look with meridian application to see whats up. You have not set it to use an MHR input or something so that it expects encryption for hirez, don't use one of these 6ch digital inputs would be my advice they are for the G)(DH DVD-A player or similar things . There is a bunch of other inputs you can use.
