As I understand it it is a 'feature' of recent Airport routers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3477 has more information about it. Basically, unless you tell it otherwise, it creates two networks: one for you and one for "guests", so your friend can bring their laptop over and browse the web, but still not be able to access your file shares or printer.
