I think if connected to such network, the player will offer setup with
static unpluged or powered off router while setting up network.
You may have to plug it in again later as the hairbrained setup guide
force you to sign up to mysb.com with no obvius step to avoid that.

Btw the easiest way and geekiest is to simply do the setup with dhcp
and all and then ssh into the Touch's linux and edit the configuration
files.

My network is halfway like this My boom is goin to the server via a
switch, so things can go pearshaped at the router (and it does all
consumer routers crash sometimes) without my morning alarm be in
danger. I will incorporate another switch soon so that my Touch can
connect. to the server via switches only.

Ofcourse DHCP can still be used in this setting to -If you have router
and it's used- a short term problem in the router will be no problems
as all clients will keep their dhcp'd settings at least untill next
power on or when lease goes out .

This is not rocket science either, networking via a switch or peer to
peer computer directly to a Squeezebox for example, a bit unusual but
not really harder to do than for example adding another mail account to
Thunderbird .

Squeezeboxes makes this harder than it should be and the Touch is not
the main offender it is the duet with it's reciever, that one can be
more problematic to get into static usually net::udap will be used when
the controller menu's has bugged out.
