I'd guess that itunes has the art only in its data base. It sounds like that when you ripped your CD's the album art was not put into the songs. If each album is in its own folder you can put a copy of the album cover art in each album folder with the file name of "folder.jpg" and then do a full rescan of your library. This should give you your album cover art.
