Many USB bus powered drives _do_ work with the Touch. Note that they're all 2.5" drives or smaller. Many people have had good luck with the Toshiba Canvio external drives. If the hard drive is powered, or if you run it from a powered USB hub, then just about any drive should work.
I'm not sure about 750 GB or 1 TB 2.5" drives, whether any have been successfully bus powered by the Touch.
