With the Touch you can either run 'SBS'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Server) from a
computer, which is the best solution, or you can run a stripped-down
version of SBS, called 'TinySC'
(http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/TinySC) on your Touch.

If you run TinySC, you just plug your USB hard drive directly into the
Touch.

If you have the opportunity to run SBS on a computer, go for that. It's
much faster (assuming your computer isn't ancient), more stable, it has
a web gui so that you can make playlists and remote control your Touch
from any computer on your network, and last but not least, SBS lets you
use plugins, which makes it much more versatile.
