Hi Richard, have you tried the analog outs? Do you get sound out of
them? If you DO get sound from the analog outs and you say you can see
a red light coming out of the far end of the optical cable, then most
likely the receiver is not configured properly for the optical input.
Make sure the input selecttor is set to the optical input. Digital
audio can go over both coax (wire) and optical. If you have plugged in
the optical you need to make sure the receiver is pointing at the
optical input.

Some receivers have an "auto-switch" mode where they will automatically
switch to whichever input has a signal, if you have both a coax input
and an optical input going into one of these receivers, its going to
choose one or the other. If you have one of these and you have a coax
input connected it might be ignoring the optical input because the coax
input is connected. (the source doesn't have to be playing anything, as
long the box its coming from is turned on, even if not playing any
music, the receiver will think its "ON")

One other obvious thing, make sure the volume control on the Touch is
turned up and the volume on the receiver is turned up. There are some
situations on the Touch that will turn the volume WAY down and you
won't hear anything.
