This is true.  Even with a directly-connected USB drive, if the
internet fails (e.g. router becomes disconnected) then the Touch stops
working.  I used to turn my router off at night, but then I found that
even when I switched the router on the next day I needed to restart the
SB server again (which can take several minutes) so now I don't bother -
my router is on 24/7.

Why the Touch was designed this way is one of life's great mysteries.
