I found my problem, it turns out that most of my compilations did not have a compilation tag. This is an extended tag that is not displayed in the main window of MP3Tag. I examined the comps that were displayed under "Various Artists" and some that were not. The difference was a compilation tag with a value of 1. I then spent 2 hours adding a compilation tag to about 70 albums, did a clear and rescan and all the comps showed up under "Various Artists". Backed up the VBA and all is well again. I think that 7.6.1 is a bit more fickle with respect to tags than 7.6.0.
