There is two misconceptions at work here .

1. Touch screen is expensive thus unecessary on a budget, it's cheap
and the fact that you set up networking and diagnose directly on the
device offset a lot of support cost. So even if the only time it is
used is the setup it is worthwhile after that you can have project
album art as screensaver which i mostly do as have an iPad .

2. BOM (bill of manufacturing ) and price are close related ,they are
not, they are at the lower limit, price is about perceived market value
, these thing cost about nothing to manufacture . Other cost as
development support and mysb.com and LMS and shipping keep stock in
warehouses etc etc is far more, all normal cost to keep a product line
in stock.
BOM goes dowm if you produce in great numbers thou, then you could
operate at lower price levels.

Remove functions and it people would not want to pay the 300$ sticker
price anymore .Now it is closer to 200$ in many places

If you want cheaper then one most sell on a greater scale like phones
and cheap dvd players this is a risk to get this scale economy. You
must really sell millions of them, then Touch could go for 50$ like a
DVD player found at wallmart or similar .

The great thing with Touch is that it does not feel compromised in any
respect it's good enough sound-quality for almost anyone , the
discerning audiophile can connect a dac of choice that's it .
