1) sounds pretty straight-forward, if the hardware is already available. 2) is unfeasible, for the reason you suggest.
3) doesn't necessarily require an IR remote. You can probably use IRBlaster from the Touch. I think that would be pretty elegant. 4) a) If you run LMS, maybe home automation/xPL to control the socket?
