Thanks to SBGK, the problem with switching to low bit rate streams is now isolated to the period count. At 100000 buffer with a period count of 2, works o.k.; period count of 3 mostly works (chipmunks on the radio stream for a second and then stabilizes, but can switch back and forth between low bitrate station and server music). At a period count of 4; using any buffer setting, up to and including 999999999, the switch back to server music from low bitrate stream kills everything. I don't know that there's a solution to allow a larger buffer AND larger period count but at least there's some understanding, now, of where the problem lies...
