Looking around at what is available in your price range, I don't think I can beat your original choices. I had considered the NAD 326 BEE, but I suspect the highs may be a bit too strident and fatiguing (and the aesthetics of the Nad don't appeal so much). I also thought about the Peachtree Decco 65, but that blows your budget.
