Did you make any modification to your SBT to disable the analog output? Assuming not (which you can confirm with headphones), the TV in order to avoid loud static may mute audio on any input when it detects the video signal is below a certain threshold, i.e. "cannot find a signal". Can you fool the TV into thinking all is ok, e.g. hook the video output of a DVD/VCR to it? Maybe somewhere in the TV settings is an "Auto-mute" function that can be switched off.
